Satyajit Das: The Cultural Transformation of the World of Finance (1/6)

by on Dec 22, 2011
When Satyajit Das started to work at a commercial bank, the world of finance was simple: banks made money by lending it. That was 44 years ago, and the tools of the trade have changed quite a bit since then. In this INET interview with Robert Johnson, Das describes some of the cultural changes that transformed the world of finance from the perspective of a practitioner and shows how traders of the "School of Hard Knocks" were replaced by a generation of traders that came straight from business school and overly relied on models and financial theory.

Word of the Day: Futures Exchange

A futures exchange is a central financial exchange where people can trade futures contracts and other derivatives, which are financial instruments whose values are derived from the price movement of the underlying asset (stocks, commodities, etc.). Futures exchanges have been around for millennia, with one of the earliest known futures markets having developed in pre-socratic Greece as far back as 600 B.C -- or thereabouts -- by Thales of Miletus, who developed the brilliant idea of securing the future use of olive presses in Miletus prior to the olive harvest for a fixed price, with the expectation that a bountiful harvest would boost demand for these presses, allowing him to sell back his options contracts to other Greeks at a higher price. Legend has it that he eventually bought all the presses with the proceeds from his financial wizardry, just to show his fellow Milesians how smart he was. In more recent times, we saw the rise of futures markets here in the United States, specifically in Chicago, where proximity to farmland
and agribusiness made it a logical choice. Although markets for hedging against fluctuations in price caused by unforeseeable gluts or shortages in crop yields already existed, these markets where highly illiquid, nontransparent, and contracts were often not honored by counterparts (hmmm sounds kinda familiar). Therefore, one of the reasons for running such transactions through a regulated exchange is to clear the trades and provide a central counterparty that will extend a guarantee that the trade will be settled as originally intended. Eventually, the Chicago Board of Trade was created in 1848 to help buyers and sellers of these derivatives hedge their positions on a regulated exchange. It was later bought out by the CME, whose Chairman Terrence Duffy, our audience should know all too well...Of course, the recent experience of MF Global's customer's with segregated trading accounts has thrown the entire premise of having such regulated markets into question, since one of the major points of paying the premium to run transactions through an exchange is in order to mitigate, if not eliminate, counterparty risk.

The Gold Price Leapt Straight Up to $1,705, Next Resistance at $1,725, $1,750 Then The Big Heart Stopper $1,800

Gold Price Close Today : 1651.50
Change : 16.40 or 1.0%

Silver Price Close Today : 31.620
Change : 0.447 cents or 1.4%

Gold Silver Ratio Today : 52.23
Change : -0.223 or -0.4%

Silver Gold Ratio Today : 0.01915
Change : 0.000081 or 0.4%
I reckon that WAS an upside down head and shoulders on the GOLD PRICE chart. Once gold cleared that $1,660 neckline about 10:00 a.m. (taking off with a runaway gap) it never even paused until $1,685, took a deep breath, then leapt clean to $1,705. Friends, by the time the janitor pulled out the broom on Comex, the GOLD PRICE had added $48.10 (2.9%) and stood at $1,699.60. In the aftermarket it's shoving against $1,705 resistance.

Y'all see how those government surprise parties can mess with markets? Gold was building a rally anyway, but that goose from the dithering Eurocrats really put power behind it.

Measured target for this rise is $1,715, but as long as that European party is raging, gold can keep on rising. $1,725 stands next resistance, then $1,750, then the big heart-stopper at $1,800.............

WARNING AND DISCLAIMER. Be advised and warned:

Do NOT use these commentaries to trade futures contracts. I don't intend them for that or write them with that short term trading outlook. I write them for long-term investors in physical metals. Take them as entertainment, but not as a timing service for futures.

NOR do I recommend investing in gold or silver Exchange Trade Funds (ETFs). Those are NOT physical metal and I fear one day one or another may go up in smoke. Unless you can breathe smoke, stay away. Call me paranoid, but the surviving rabbit is wary of traps.

NOR do I recommend trading futures options or other leveraged paper gold and silver products. These are not for the inexperienced.

NOR do I recommend buying gold and silver on margin or with debt.

What DO I recommend? Physical gold and silver coins and bars in your own hands.

One final warning: NEVER insert a 747 Jumbo Jet up your nose.http://silver-and-gold-prices.goldprice.org/2011/10/gold-price-leapt-straight-up-to-1705.html

Ira Epstein's Weekly Metal Report

Ira Epstein's Weekly Metal Report
Thursday, 1 September 2011

September should prove to be a very important month for gold. The month starts off with President Obama’s “new” game plan for the US economy. Whatever the plan, it will be taken as part of his re-election effort, whether it works or not.
If the President can’t get Congress to act, which I don’t think he can, his plan will likely be dead before its announcement. He has little choice but to find a way to pull things together. He looks amateurish getting his speech date getting pushed back today.
The President is going to propose permanent tax changes. The depth of the changes is up for grabs. Corporate taxes as well as taxes on high income individuals will be mentioned, but hard to get reformed. He might be better off by focusing on taxes that currently curtail employers from new hiring. Head taxes of any kind should be on the chopping block. Government reform is another issue as he can attack this given the popularity of doing so with voters.
A speech by the President on Wednesday morning focused completely on infrastructure projects. It was interesting that he picked yesterday to float it, not on Labor Day and that it focused on infrastructure. Certain highway construction programs expire at the end of September. If allowed to expire it would cut the deficit and about 4000 people will go unemployed. My take is that this speech was a “test run” on his upcoming speech, now shortly after Labor Day.
Another wild card for gold is Europe’s sovereign debt issue. Finland will probably get from Greece the collateral it wants and get it placed where it wants. The German Parliament on the other hand is seeing a ground swell against further bailout measures. The rift is so large that it puts the re-election of Chancellor Merkel along with her coalition in Parliament in question, which puts the EU rescue plan at risk.......
