Word of the Day: Futures Exchange

A futures exchange is a central financial exchange where people can trade futures contracts and other derivatives, which are financial instruments whose values are derived from the price movement of the underlying asset (stocks, commodities, etc.). Futures exchanges have been around for millennia, with one of the earliest known futures markets having developed in pre-socratic Greece as far back as 600 B.C -- or thereabouts -- by Thales of Miletus, who developed the brilliant idea of securing the future use of olive presses in Miletus prior to the olive harvest for a fixed price, with the expectation that a bountiful harvest would boost demand for these presses, allowing him to sell back his options contracts to other Greeks at a higher price. Legend has it that he eventually bought all the presses with the proceeds from his financial wizardry, just to show his fellow Milesians how smart he was. In more recent times, we saw the rise of futures markets here in the United States, specifically in Chicago, where proximity to farmland
and agribusiness made it a logical choice. Although markets for hedging against fluctuations in price caused by unforeseeable gluts or shortages in crop yields already existed, these markets where highly illiquid, nontransparent, and contracts were often not honored by counterparts (hmmm sounds kinda familiar). Therefore, one of the reasons for running such transactions through a regulated exchange is to clear the trades and provide a central counterparty that will extend a guarantee that the trade will be settled as originally intended. Eventually, the Chicago Board of Trade was created in 1848 to help buyers and sellers of these derivatives hedge their positions on a regulated exchange. It was later bought out by the CME, whose Chairman Terrence Duffy, our audience should know all too well...Of course, the recent experience of MF Global's customer's with segregated trading accounts has thrown the entire premise of having such regulated markets into question, since one of the major points of paying the premium to run transactions through an exchange is in order to mitigate, if not eliminate, counterparty risk.

South Africa’s Incredibly Shrinking Gold Production

  • November 17, 2011
Finding evidence to pop the talk of a gold bubble is much easier than finding a needle in a haystack. There are enough needles of evidence out there to fill a pin cushion. The latest Gold Demand Trends Report from the World Gold Council (WGC) contained two salient visuals of how the dynamics of the global gold market have shifted from the West to the East over the past 40 years.....

How to Invest in Water...By Jeff Macke , Yahoo Breakout

How to Invest in Water: “The Great Untold Story”

By Jeff Macke | Breakout – Fri, Nov 11, 2011

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/breakout/investing-water-great-untold-story-173537241.html

"It's the great untold story," says Joe Quinlan, chief investment strategist at U.S. Trust. He believes water is priced incorrectly (read: free to Americans), leading to a lack of both investment dollars and incentives for the subsidies doled out so freely to industries of lesser importance.
Regardless of how we feel about it in the U.S., "in China and India they are building out the water infrastructure." Without these improvements these countries simply can't continue to grow. It may seem like an easy problem to solve given that 70% of the earth is submerged, but Quinlan says that's not the case. According to him only 1% of the world's water supply is potable with 2% of the rest frozen, and the remainder in the seas........

Why Silver and Gold will go up.....by Jason Hommel - silverstockreport.com

Why Silver and Gold will go up, and by How Much

(And Emgold, a great $4 million stock; developing a $2 billion gold mine!)

Silver Stock Report

by Jason Hommel, Octoer 28, 2011

The government is spending $1500 billion more per year than they are getting in taxes.  They are not borrowing this money; they are printing it.  There is no political will to fix the problem.  The "Occupy Wall Street" protests are about a protest against the Wall Street bailouts, but also, it's about the 99% wanting more government handouts than they are already getting, and already 43 million Americans are on food stamps.  Government over spending, and especially the bank bailouts, will cause inflation, and may ultimately destroy the dollar.   The question is, by how much?

Let's do some math.  If only 1% of paper money in savings was spent on gold, that would be about $180 billion.

Yet the annual world gold market is only about 75 million ounces (oz.) of newly mined gold each year.

How much gold are Americans currently buying?  About 1 million oz. of gold eagles per year, and I suppose Americans buy about twice that much gold, so only about 2 million oz. out of the 75 million oz. available.

At $1666/oz., the world is spending about $125 billion on gold each year, with Americans spending only about $3 billion of that.

If Americans put only 1% of their cash into gold to protect themselves from inflation, which is 180 billion, I'd estimate that the gold price would at least triple, to $5000/oz.

But the dollar is no longer backed by gold.  In theory, every dollar in circulation could be spent on gold, and then, spent on gold again!

If all US dollars were spent on official US gold, that would be about $18 trillion spent on 261 million oz. of gold.  That implies a price of $69,000 per oz.

What about silver? ............

The proof that Europe knows it will fail
Published : October 31st, 2011

Almost 30% of our economy was based upon producing things the restof the world wanted to buy. Another 12% of GDP was from productivefunctions of agriculture and mining. .....finance and professionalservices accounted for only 14% of the economy. Today manufacturingaccounts for 11% of the economy, while finance and professional servicesaccount for 33% of the economy."

The Chinese, the Indians and other "third world" people have not needed to wake up to this imperative. They simply have neverabandoned history and its lessons. .......

Crackdown on Commodity Trading....finance.yahoo.com/blogs/breakout

Crackdown on Commodity Trading: A Good Idea Spoiled

Wed, Oct 19, 2011

After four years of fighting between government officials and commodity trading agencies of various stripes the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) voted 3-2 to impose limits on the number of futures and swap contracts a trader can hold. The new restrictions are intended to reduce speculation and cap price spikes in oil, gold, and grain prices, among other commodities. But will this work as intended?
It's mostly "brouhaha about getting speculation out of the markets," says Ed Meir, senior commodity analyst with MF Global. Leaving aside the fact that the only markets without speculation are grocery stores, the question is whether or not the CFTC's action is really a step towards eliminating spikes like we saw in 2008 when crude oil jumped to over $140 a barrel. The short answer is probably not.
Meir says this compromised solution is going to make it more difficult for a market to find the natural, unregulated price of the commodities. The "bigger spreads and bigger price distortions" Meir describes are, of course, a field of trading dreams for exactly the type of reckless speculators the rule is intended to put out of business. For this and other reasons Meir characterizes the restrictions "more than a little baffling." ..........
