Swiss move aggressively to weaken franc

Sep 6, 2011 by

Switzerland's central bank has turned the tables on investors who have buying the Swiss franc as a safe haven and driving up its value against other currencies.
The Swiss National Bank shocked foreign exchange markets by setting a minimum exchange rate target of 1.20 francs to the euro.

The franc's rally has been threatening the Swiss economy by making the country's exports too expensive.

LONDON (REUTERS) -

Gold fell from record highs on Tuesday, after Switzerland's decision to peg its currency to the euro shook financial markets and battered the franc, putting the price of bullion in Swiss francs for its largest daily gain in three years.

The Swiss National Bank said on Tuesday it would set a minimum exchange rate target of 1.20 francs to the euro and would enforce it by buying foreign currency in unlimited quantities.

The Swiss franc tumbled by more than 7 percent against the dollar and by more than 8.5 percent against the euro, while gold priced in the currency rose by more than 7 percent, and was set for its biggest daily gain since mid-September 2008, when the global credit crunch intensified, prompting the U.S. Federal Reserve to halve rates to 1.0 percent.

Spot gold was last quoted down 0.5 percent at 0918 GMT, having risen earlier to a record $1,920.30 an ounce

Dollar Declines Ahead Of Inflation Data - asia.advfn.com/forex/news

Dollar Declines Ahead Of Inflation Data

20:27, 17th August 2011

(RTTNews) - The dollar remained under pressure versus other major currencies Wednesday morning, dropping to its lowest since July versus the euro.
Risk appetite was picking up a bit ahead of pivotal U.S. inflation data, weighing on the dollar.
The Labor Department will release data on the July producer price index at 8:30 a.m. ET. July PPI is forecast to show a 0.1 percent rise after a 0.4 percent decline in June. Core PPI, which strips out food and energy costs, is forecast to show a 0.2 percent increase.
The buck has tumbled versus the euro despite concerns about the euro zone debt crisis. Yesterday's meeting of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel failed to produce a coherent plan to backstop their debt-ridden neighbors.
However, the leaders shored up their defense of the euro.
"We want to express our absolute will to defend the euro and assume Germany and France's particular responsibilities in Europe and to have on all of these subjects a complete unity of views," said Sarkozy.
The buck dropped to $1.4505 versus the euro, and slid to a 2-month low of $1.6531 against the sterling.

Swiss franc continues remorseless climb - www.sharecast.com

Swiss franc continues remorseless climb

By Michael Millar

Wed 17 Aug 201

LONDON (SHARECAST) - The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has again tried - and failed - to push down the value of the Swiss franc, which it says is "massively overvalued".

It increased bank sight deposits from CHF120bn to CHF200bn, significantly increasing the money supply and placing further downward pressure on interest rates.

Sight deposits are funds which can be transferred immediately and without restriction to another account or which can be converted into cash.

However, the central bank refrained from either pegging the currency to the euro or adopting a target, as had been expected.

The franc climbed 1.2% against the dollar and 0.7% versus the euro.

It’s worth noting however that the ‘safe haven’ Swiss franc continued to surge against all its major counterparts despite the risk reversal, suggesting that investors may yet still see further weakness in the days ahead. The swissie was sharply higher at the close of trade, advancing more than 4.7% against a heavy greenback.
The economic docket tomorrow sees little in the way of event risk, with MBA mortgage applications and June wholesale inventories on tap. Later in the day the July monthly budget statement is released, with consensus estimates calling for a deficit of $140 billion, down from the previous print of -$43.1 billion. And while the calendar remains rather light, dollar price action is likely to hinge on market sentiment, as investors digest the long-term implications of FOMC’s vow for a prolonged zero rate policy.

Peter Shiff: Problem is the debt, not the ceiling

RussiaToday | Jul 29, 2011 | 301 views
The country which holds more U.S. debt than any other, has hit out at the failure of Congress to reach a deal over its debt ceiling. China says the political deadlock in Washington threatens the entire global economy.
So far Republicans and Democrats have delayed a vote over limiting what the country owes, as they haven't agreed on rival budgets. They have until Tuesday to avoid a potentially devastating default. Earlier in the week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Beijing to reassure Asian leaders, that America will not fall back on its debt payments. But Peter Schiff from investment company Euro Pacific Capital, thinks China could well dump the dollar as its main reserve currency.
